The Project

Innovability is a Cross-border Cooperation Programme of European Union designed to enhance differently skilled people's quality of life, transforming accessibility constraints into opportunities. Research and Innovation are fundamental factors for the economic and social development of a community: it is possible to talk about innovation only if there is a real improvement in people's life quality and when technologies are used to satisfy real citizens' needs.

The presence of architectural and cultural barriers in some Italian and Greek municipalities are instruments of social isolation for differently skilled people: this "not-inclusive" system represents a serious obstacle for a new territory development model, based on the accessibility culture. On the other hand a society with structures, services and places accessible from everyone grants wellness and full participation to social life. Italian municipalities of Andrano, San Cesario di Lecce and Calimera, the Consortium of Apulian Tourist Operator, together with the Greek Development Agency of Etoloakarnania S.A. and the Development Company of Western Greece S.A. are investing a lot on innovative services and smart infrastructures. This process requires agreement, collaboration, dialogue and innovative behaviours by all actors, in order to get the full social inclusion in the territories involved. The development of a remarkable sensibility on the accessibility theme is contributing to pay attention to the concept of diversity as a "stimulating element" for the imagination of technicians, architects and designers. The idea is to strenghten this model of inclusive society as much as possible. So said the challenge of this project is to make the couple "Innovation and disability" inseparable in current society, making services, activities and information accessible to the biggest possible number of people.

Expected results

The usability of the resources by a widened group of users (including differently skilled people and people with other different difficulties) with a consequent participation of citizens to the social and economic life.

The spreading of the accessibility culture contributing to realize a new way to look at the whole territory, based on the accessible and widened design of the urban and natural spaces.

The usage of technologically advanced tools that can help the access to the structure and the usability and knowledge of the territory through multi sensorial design.

Improvement of the accessibility of places and structures, knowledge and opportunities.

Enhancing the public's awareness of social themes.

All the project's actions aim at important results in favour of the involved territories. WP 3 concerning infrastructural interventions allows the modernization and adjustment of the detected structures as of the accessibility criteria. WP 2 and WP 4 contribute to the spreading of accessibility culture, developing public's awareness toward social themes. WP 5 strengthens the relationship between the producers, users and supporters of the innovation market favouring the exchange of experiences and good practices between institutional subjects and entrepreneurial realities differently committed in developing technological solutions, in favour of differently skilled subjects.
